Looking for a Prague insider tip? Try Karlin!

Old town square-done! Charles Bridge-crossed! Petrin hill- climbed! After you have visited this and the other main attractions of Prague, you might be thinking of strolling away from the beaten track. May I suggest that you wander out to Karlin? You also can take the tram number 8 ;-)

What makes Karlin so special? In 2002 there was a major flood in Prague, the river Vltava (Moldau for the German speakers and music freaks) rose due to heavy rain and basically covered the whole inner city area. It was a major catastrophe, leaving many parts of the city under water for days. Karlin was one of the worst affected areas. Many people lost their livelihood due to lack of insurance cover. But now, 7 years later, this area has beautifully recovered and is the ‘place to go’ for a quiet meal or a bit of bar-hopping. Restaurants and bars have been lovingly restored and often feature brick vaults, wooden beams and cosy cellar bars. You can wander up and down the main street or explore the side streets and court yards for hidden gems of gastronomic culture. Or perhaps do your own “safari dinner” in Karlin, taking every course in another pub/ restaurant, yummy!

Other attractions in Karlin, apart from food and drink, include beautiful historical buildings such as the Invalidovna, a large Baroque-style complex designed by the architect Dientzenhofer. Karlin is nestled between the Vltava (Moldau for German speakers and music geeks) river and the hills of Ziskov – only a short walk or tram ride away from the tourist traps in the center of Prague.
